Dhaka, Oct 19 (V7N)- Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has urged the opposition to balance its public speeches and criticism of the government with meaningful participation in constitutional reforms.

He made the remarks on Monday at the inauguration of the July Memorial and the modernisation of Osmani Udyan in the capital.

Salahuddin said the government expected the opposition to identify its mistakes and offer constructive criticism. However, he stressed that public statements should be matched by an active role in the constitutional reform process.

Referring to the student-led uprising of 2024, the Home Minister said the events of August 5 emerged from a continuous democratic struggle spanning 2009 to 2024. He described the July Uprising as a guide for shaping the country’s future.

He also stressed the importance of preserving the memory of the uprising through literature, theatre and cultural programmes, saying its significance could not be captured solely through an annual commemoration.

“July should be reflected in many literary works, plays and cultural programmes. It cannot be completed simply by the arrival of July or through an annual ceremony,” he said.

On implementation of the July National Charter, Salahuddin said the process involved constitutional procedures as well as legal and regulatory measures.

He said the government wanted to pursue a constitutional amendment and had no objection to describing the initiative as reform.

However, he alleged that the opposition had yet to cooperate with the government on the proposed constitutional amendment.

The Home Minister’s remarks highlighted the government’s call for greater opposition participation in the constitutional process alongside its role in scrutinising government actions.
