Dhaka, Sep 05 (V7N) — A month after the fall of the Awami League government during a student-led coup, the anti-discrimination student movement has announced a significant event to commemorate the uprising. The movement, which played a key role in toppling the government, will hold a "Shahidi March" on Thursday, marking the one-month anniversary of the student-led revolution.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the Student-Teacher Centre (TSC) at Dhaka University on Wednesday. Sarjis Alam, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, revealed that the march will begin at 3 p.m. from the Raju sculpture at Dhaka University. The march will then proceed to Manik Mia Avenue and the Sangsad Bhavan, passing through significant areas like Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh, and Neelkhet, before concluding at the Central Shaheed Minar.

The student movement has also announced plans to conduct a memorial tour across divisional and district cities starting Friday, in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the protests.

Sarjis Alam expressed the purpose of the "Shahidi March," stating, "This march will honour the martyrs and the countless brothers and sisters who are injured, some of whom have lost their limbs or eyes, and others who remain in hospital beds. We will march to remember them."

The student uprising, which erupted on August 5, resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 people, including children, women, and students. Several thousand others were injured, primarily during violent crackdowns by law enforcement agencies. The protests marked the end of nearly 16 years of Awami League rule, with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India after resigning amid growing public unrest.

Following the collapse of the Awami League government, the President dissolved the government. On August 8, Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the chief adviser of an interim government. The Shahidi March is seen as both a tribute to the fallen and a powerful reminder of the movement that led to this political change in Bangladesh.
