A significant increase in garment exports from Bangladesh through India's Delhi airport has led to a congestion of goods, highlighting the growing demand for Bangladeshi products in international markets.

From January to March this year, approximately 90,000 metric tons of goods were exported through Delhi airport, with Bangladeshi products accounting for nine percent of the total. This marks a substantial increase from previous years, where Bangladeshi exports through Delhi airport were less than two percent.

The surge in Bangladeshi garment exports through Delhi began in February last year, with the airport becoming an attractive option for exporters due to its efficient management and accessibility to cargo flights from various airlines. Previously, Bangladeshi garments were mainly exported through Kolkata airport, but airlines like Qatar and Emirates have halted cargo flights to Kolkata, prompting companies to shift operations to Delhi.

Export agents at Delhi airport revealed that around 30 trucks loaded with Bangladeshi garments arrive at the cargo terminal every night, leading to delays as customs inspections are required before goods can be released.

Delhi International Airport Limited, which manages the airport, has taken measures to address the congestion, including the deployment of additional X-ray machines to expedite customs inspections. Despite challenges, the airport has facilitated the export of eight thousand metric tons of ready-made garments to various countries in the past year.

According to industry experts, the shift towards air exports, particularly in the fast fashion segment, has been driven by disruptions in sea routes and the need for quick delivery to Western markets. Fast fashion companies are increasingly opting for air transportation to meet the demand for trendy, affordable clothing in Europe and the United States.

The trend underscores the significance of Delhi airport as a key hub for garment exports, providing Bangladeshi businesses with favorable rates and efficient logistics support. As demand for Bangladeshi products continues to grow, stakeholders are working to streamline operations and address logistical challenges to sustain the momentum in garment exports through Delhi airport.
