Panchagarh, Jan 06 (V7N)- The intensity of winter is increasing steadily in Panchagarh, the northernmost district of the country, as a mild cold wave continues to sweep through the region from the north.
Due to its close geographical proximity to the Himalayas, Panchagarh is experiencing a sharp drop in temperature, with the mercury falling to single digits, intensifying the cold.
According to the Tentulia Meteorological Observatory, the minimum temperature was recorded at 8.6 degrees Celsius at 9:00 am on Tuesday (January 6). At that time, humidity stood at 100 percent, while wind speed ranged between 6 and 8 kilometers per hour, further worsening the chill factor.
On Monday, the district recorded a minimum temperature of 12.8 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature stood at 16.5 degrees Celsius.
For the past several days, dense fog has enveloped various parts of Panchagarh from dawn until late morning. In many areas, sunlight remains absent until noon. Fog density increases during the morning and evening hours, disrupting traffic movement on roads and highways.
The low-income population is bearing the brunt of the severe cold. Many daily wage earners are unable to go to work due to the harsh weather, resulting in a decline in daily income. As a result, numerous families are struggling to meet basic food needs. Winter nights have become particularly difficult for the poor, many of whom lack adequate warm clothing.
Health risks have also increased amid the persistent cold and fog. Local hospitals and clinics report a rise in cold-related illnesses, with children and elderly people making up the majority of patients.
Jitendra Nath Roy, Officer-in-Charge of the Tentulia Meteorological Observatory, said that a mild cold wave continues to affect the district due to icy winds and bitter cold.
“There may be fog during the mornings and evenings for the next few days, and the temperature could drop further,” he warned.
