Cox’s Bazar, Jan 17, (V7N) - Three individuals have confessed to their involvement in the murder of Golam Rabbani, a former councillor of Khulna, in Cox’s Bazar. They made their confessions under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure at the Cox's Bazar court on Wednesday evening.
According to their statements, the incident occurred on January 9 at around 6:30 PM. Golam Rabbani (54), a recently removed councillor of Khulna City Corporation, and a young woman named Ritu were sitting on chairs on the beach in front of the Seagull Hotel at Cox's Bazar. At 8:00 PM, the two stood up and walked toward the Seagull Hotel from the beach. Ritu was walking ahead, while Rabbani was walking behind, talking on his phone.
The confessions revealed that Ritu had signaled the others to keep Golam Rabbani under surveillance. Sheikh Shahriyar Islam (27), also known as Pappu, and three others had been monitoring Rabbani. As Rabbani walked toward the paved road from the beach and entered a shrub area, Sheikh Shahriyar approached him from the front. From the darkness, he pointed a pistol at Rabbani's head and shot him. Rabbani fell to the ground immediately. Afterward, Sheikh Shahriyar and Golam Rasul (25) took a rickshaw and fled to Cox Queen Resort, while Ritu and Riaz, two other suspects, went in a different direction.
The three individuals who confessed were Ritu (24), Sheikh Shahriyar Islam (27), and Golam Rasul (25), all residents of Khulna.
The police had arrested them on Monday night in Moulvibazar, and they were brought to court on Wednesday evening.
On Wednesday, Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police, Rahmat Ullah, confirmed in a press briefing that Sheikh Shahriyar Islam, also known as Pappu, killed Golam Rabbani as revenge for the murder of his uncle Shahidul. The other two suspects, Ritu and Golam Rasul, also actively participated in the crime. The location in Cox's Bazar was chosen for the murder.
Court sources confirmed that Ritu gave her confession before Senior Judicial Magistrate Hamimun Tanzin, Sheikh Shahriyar Islam before Senior Judicial Magistrate Akhtar Jaber, and Golam Rasul before Senior Judicial Magistrate Asad Uddin Mohammad Asif. Their confessions began at 6:00 PM and ended at 9:00 PM.
Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Elias Khan, confirmed the authenticity of the confessions. He stated, “They were sent to jail around 10:00 PM after the confessions.”
It should be noted that Golam Rabbani was shot in the head in a shrub area near Seagull Hotel on January 9. He was a former councillor of Ward 4 of Khulna City Corporation and the vice president of the Khulna Metropolitan Volunteer League.
