Dhaka, Sep 08 (V7N)-  Shajahan Khan, a senior leader of the Awami League and former minister, has been sent to jail after being remanded for two days. The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider ordered his detention following his appearance in court on Sunday. The magistrate also denied his bail application and directed the jail authorities to provide proper medical treatment in accordance with jail regulations.

Shajahan Khan was arrested from the Dhanmondi area last Thursday in connection with the death of 14-year-old Abdul Motaleb in Dhanmondi on 4 August. Initially, the court granted a seven-day remand for questioning, but he was presented before the court after only two days due to his deteriorating health.

The investigating officer informed the court that Shajahan Khan fell ill during his remand, leading to his early court appearance. The court has now ordered him to remain in jail until the investigation into the murder case is concluded.

Shajahan Khan, who has been elected as a Member of Parliament eight consecutive times from Madaripur-2 Constituency, is also the Executive President of the Bangladesh Workers Federation. He served as the Minister of Shipping in the Awami League government and has had a long political career, first being elected as an independent candidate in 1986. He later represented the Awami League in subsequent elections.
