Kurigram , Nov 23 (V7N) – The northern district of Kurigram is grappling with chilly weather as temperatures drop to 16°C, accompanied by dense fog that disrupts daily life and hampers livelihoods.
Farmers, laborers, and daily wage earners are particularly affected, as they are compelled to work under harsh conditions marked by heavy fog and biting cold.
Impact on Daily Life
The Kurigram Meteorological Office reported that the minimum temperature in the district was recorded at 16°C at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with the sun not visible until 9 a.m. Dense fog from midnight to morning blankets vast areas, causing disruptions to transportation as vehicular movement slows on various routes.
Though temperatures rise slightly during the day, the chill intensifies after midnight.
Health Concerns Escalate
The cold snap has led to an uptick in winter-related illnesses such as colds, fevers, pneumonia, and diarrheal diseases. Hospitals in the district are seeing a growing influx of patients seeking treatment.
Local Reactions
Abdul Malek, a resident of Mather Par village in Sadar upazila, said, "The chill has noticeably increased over the last two days. The thick fog feels like continuous rain, making it hard to work."
Rickshaw puller Rohomot from the same area added, "In the morning, the fog is so dense I can’t see the road, and I have to rely on lights to navigate."
Weather Forecast
Subal Chandra Sarkar, acting officer of the Kurigram Meteorological Office, stated, "Although the current cold isn’t severe, chilly winds are expected to start next week, further lowering the district's temperature."
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported that the lowest temperature in the country on Friday was 14.3°C in Panchagarh’s Tetulia, while the highest temperature, 31.8°C, was recorded in Kutubdia and Cox’s Bazar.
