Dhaka, Jan 31 (V7N) – The first phase of the 58th Biswa Ijtema has officially begun on the banks of the Turag River in Tongi, drawing millions of devotees from across the world. However, the US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a travel advisory for its citizens, warning of potential traffic disruptions and security risks in the area.
Despite the US Embassy's cautionary notice, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Dr. Md. Nazmul Karim Khan has assured that there is no security risk surrounding the Ijtema. Speaking at a press conference in front of the police control room at the Ijtema Maidan on Friday afternoon, he dismissed concerns, stating that all necessary security measures are in place.
GMP Commissioner: "No Security Threat"
Commissioner Nazmul Karim Khan responded to questions regarding the US Embassy's advisory, saying,
"The US ambassador occasionally issues alerts based on their own security assessments. However, we take security measures based on real-time field assessments. We do not see any security threat or risk here. Everything is peaceful."
He further emphasized that the Bangladesh authorities are ensuring full security for both domestic and foreign attendees, with Ijtema volunteers also contributing to security efforts.
US Embassy Travel Advisory
On Thursday, the US Embassy in Dhaka issued a travel advisory on its official Facebook page, urging American citizens to exercise caution while traveling near Tongi, Gazipur, and surrounding areas.
According to the US Embassy:
- The Biswa Ijtema, the second-largest Muslim gathering in the world, is expected to draw nearly four million people.
- The event will be held in two phases: January 31 - February 6 and February 14 - 18.
- Due to the large crowd, vehicular and pedestrian traffic in Dhaka and nearby areas will be significantly affected.
- Delays at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport are expected, and travelers are advised to carry their airline tickets to show at police checkpoints.
- Travelers are urged to reconsider their plans, allow extra time for travel, and stay cautious around large public gatherings.
The US Embassy, however, assured that its operations will continue as normal.
Security Measures in Place
In response to the advisory, GMP authorities have assured that they are closely monitoring the situation and have strengthened security around the Ijtema ground. Additional measures include:
- Increased police deployment in and around the Ijtema venue.
- Security checks for foreign guests.
- Traffic control measures to manage congestion.
- Collaboration with Ijtema volunteers for crowd management.
While the US Embassy remains cautious, local authorities maintain that there is no imminent security threat, and the Biswa Ijtema is proceeding peacefully with all necessary security and logistical arrangements in place.
