Khagrachari, 23 Sep (V7N)-  Today marks the last day of the 72-hour road blockade called in protest of recent violence in the hill districts of Khagrachari and Rangamati. While the situation in both districts has become more calm and normal, traffic on all long-distance and internal routes remains halted for the third consecutive day. No major incidents have been reported during the blockade.

As a result of the unrest, educational institutions in the district saw low attendance, with students refraining from attending classes. Additionally, around 1,400 tourists remain stranded in Sajek due to the blockade, and efforts to bring them back have yet to be successful.

In the ongoing aftermath of the violence, a murder case has been filed at Khagrachari Sadar police station in connection with the death of Mamun, a youth who was fatally beaten on 18 August on allegations of theft. Mamun's wife, Mukta Akhter, has filed the case, naming three individuals, two of whom are involved in Awami League politics, along with 10 to 12 unidentified Paharis and Bengalis.

Mamun’s death sparked widespread violence, resulting in the deaths of four people and several injuries in both Khagrachari and Rangamati. The current blockade was called by student protesters in Dhaka and has received support from the regional political group United People's Democratic Front (UPDF).

Despite the disruption caused by the blockade, local authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and peace has largely returned to the region.
