Comilla, Apr 22 (V7N): Member of Parliament Selim Bhuiyan has faced widespread criticism after entering a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination hall and appearing in a Facebook Live broadcast, in apparent violation of public examination regulations.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Homna Government High School examination center in Comilla. Bhuiyan, who is also an organizational secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for the Comilla division, was seen in a video that has since gone viral on social media.
According to multiple teachers present at the center, the lawmaker entered the premises accompanied by two individuals carrying mobile phones, who recorded and broadcast the visit live. One of them streamed the video from a Facebook page bearing the MP’s name.
In the nearly nine-minute broadcast, Bhuiyan was seen walking up the stairs of a nearby college building and standing outside an examination room, asking teachers and students about the question paper. At one point, the head teacher Tajul Islam greeted him, and Bhuiyan gestured for him to leave while the live stream continued.
He later entered another exam room, walked to the middle of the hall, and again asked students about their exam experience, remaining live for approximately eight minutes and 57 seconds.
Guardians and education stakeholders expressed concern, saying such actions by a public representative were inappropriate and could increase pressure on students during an already stressful examination environment.
Former president of the district civic body, Shah Alamgir Khan, said the incident clearly violated examination laws, noting that no individual is permitted to enter exam halls with electronic devices during an ongoing exam.
Center secretary and head teacher Tajul Islam said he briefly met the MP upon arrival but was occupied with exam duties and was unaware of the live broadcast. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahidul Islam confirmed that authorities have taken note of the incident and warned those concerned to prevent any recurrence in upcoming exams.
In response, Selim Bhuiyan said it is part of his responsibility to ensure that examinations are conducted fairly and peacefully, adding that the live broadcast may have occurred without his knowledge.
Chairman of the Comilla Education Board, Professor Shamsul Islam, stated that under examination rules, no one is allowed to enter exam centers with mobile phones or electronic devices. He added that the matter will be reported to higher authorities for further action.
