National attention has been drawn to a recent ruckus at BRAC University (BRACU). After making contentious remarks about the educational curriculum and publicly tearing pages out of textbooks, Asif Mahtab, an adjunct faculty member in the private university's philosophy department, was fired.

Professor Mujibur Rahman, the acting Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, harshly condemned the government's educational strategy in a statement made public on Tuesday. The statement, which was posted on Jamaat's official Facebook page, read, "By forcing a curriculum devoid of morality and ethics, the fascist single-party government is seriously scheming to undermine our youngsters' character. Muslims make up 92% of the population in Bangladesh, and the vast majority of them have rejected this curriculum.

Asif Mahtab has behaved like a real idealistic instructor in this situation. Motivated by morality, he has voiced strong opposition to homosexuality, reflecting the views of the Bangladeshi populace. I truly applaud him for taking such a strong stand. By firing him, BRAC University administrators have effectively taken a stand against a national identity-challenging curriculum. I vehemently disagree with and criticize this BRAC University administration action.

Rahman further urged that Mahtab's dismissal be immediately reversed. "I implore the BRAC University authorities to promptly reinstate Asif Mahtab," he added.
