Koira upazila of Khulna is surrounded by only water and water, but drinking water is not available. Even if there is water, it is full of salinity. Natural disasters are constantly hitting this town. The people here are getting fed up with the adverse effects of the environment. They demanded that measures be taken to ensure that people get clean water.

There is an acute shortage of clean drinking water in Koira Upazila of Khulna. Especially in the remote towns of the upazila, village after village does not get water suitable for food. This time in Koira, the situation has become acute due to the lack of clean food and drink in most areas at the beginning of the dry season. And because of the acute crisis of fresh water, people are living by fetching water from far away.

Koira Sadar, North Bedkashi, Maheshwaripur and most of the villages of Maharajpur Union are severe to severe. On the other hand, the sources of drinking water in these rural areas are ponds. And due to natural calamities these poor people have to suffer because they cannot drink water from these ponds.

And due to the lack of clean water, common people are suffering from various water-borne complex and serious diseases by drinking contaminated water. There are 40 thousand 500 families in 7 unions of Koira Upazila.

The population is around 3 lakhs. Among them, 60 percent people are deprived of safe drinking water. According to the upazila public health department, the number of tube wells in the upazila is 1,632 and the number of PSFs is 165.

It is known about the reason, unplanned cultivation of shrimps is being carried out by extracting brackish water in most of the upazila lands, canals, banks and ponds. The water and soil of the entire area is getting polluted. As a result, the people of Koira are traveling miles to collect fresh water.

The situation in the villages adjacent to the Sundarbans is even worse. Most of the people in this area live below the poverty line. The people of Haddisa somehow survive by fighting relentlessly with the river crocodiles and Sundarbans tigers and nature.

If you don't see it, you can't understand how low their standard of living is. These hungry people have been fetching water from 10/15 km distance to drink it. Basanti Munda of Koira Village No. 6 said that they collect water from a pond in the middle of the bill, 3 km from their house and drink it.

Koira Upazila Public Health Engineer Istiaq Ahmed said that 4,500 tanks have been distributed to store drinking water in Koira Upazila. According to the information, it is not possible to install tube wells in North Bedkashi, Koira and Maheshwaripur Union due to excess salinity.

From November to June the water level in these areas drops rapidly. As a result, water does not rise through most of the tube wells. And because of this almost all people are forced to drink contaminated water. Normal salinity of water in these areas is 1 to 2 thousand millicentimeters.

Aktarul Islam of No. 1 Koira village said that since the irrigation season has started, the water level is not rising in the tube well. Because of that there is water shortage.

Chairman of Koira Upazila Parishad SM Shafiqul Islam said that the problem of drinking water in Koira has been going on for a long time. Setting up of water plants, construction of PFS, rain water through government as well as private organizations to solve the problem of drinking water.
