Dhaka, Dec 08 (V7N) - Stand-in captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz has emphasized fostering a positive team environment as Bangladesh prepares for a three-match ODI series against the West Indies. Miraz takes the leadership role in the absence of regular captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who is sidelined with a groin injury sustained during the Afghanistan ODI series.
"I want to create a positive environment and help everyone give their best," Miraz said in St. Kitts ahead of the series opener. "Every player's performance is crucial. My role is to support and motivate my teammates and contribute to the team myself."
Recent Dominance Against the West Indies
Bangladesh has been dominant in recent bilateral ODI series against the West Indies, remaining unbeaten in their last 11 ODI meetings since 2016. However, this time, the Tigers face a tough challenge with key players like Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Towhid Hridoy missing due to injuries.
"This series is undoubtedly challenging because several players are missing," Miraz admitted. "But it's also a great opportunity for others. I hope those who get the chance can make this series memorable for them."
While Bangladesh's bowlers have been instrumental in their recent successes, including a historic Test victory in the Caribbean, the batting lineup has shown inconsistency. Miraz urged the batters to play a more significant role, highlighting their ability to score big runs on the same ground in the past.
"In 2018, we scored over 300 runs in the final match on this ground and won the series. In 2022, we came back and won again," Miraz said. "Batters need to step up. Cricket revolves around runs. When you score, it makes things much easier for the bowlers."
Opportunity for Emerging Players
Despite the absence of senior players, Miraz sees this as a chance for younger players to shine and secure their spots in the team.
Bangladesh aims to maintain their unbeaten streak against the West Indies and build momentum as they head toward key international assignments. The first ODI will be a test of both leadership for Miraz and the adaptability of the team under challenging circumstances.
