Washington, Feb 26, (V7N) — A deal that could see Ukraine share some of its mineral resource revenue with the United States is close to being finalized, following pressure from President Donald Trump. Trump has consistently argued that Ukraine should repay the U.S. for the financial and military aid provided since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump mentioned that a deal on rare earth minerals and other resources was nearly finished. "We’ve pretty much negotiated our deal on rare Earth and various other things," Trump said, though he did not provide specifics on the final terms. The Ukrainian embassy in Washington has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Trump also indicated that "some form of peacekeeping" forces could be part of any agreement to end the ongoing conflict.

Reports suggest that Ukraine has agreed to a deal on rare minerals, but the exact details remain unclear. The Washington Post cited sources stating that the U.S. and Ukraine had agreed to a framework that would allow Washington partial access to Ukraine's minerals, oil, and gas.

Trump has made it clear that he seeks to "recoup" the funds the U.S. has spent on supporting Ukraine. Earlier proposals, including one involving $500 billion worth of mineral rights, were rejected by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as the amount far surpassed the financial and military aid the U.S. had provided to Ukraine.

It remains unclear whether the new deal will include security guarantees to ensure continued U.S. military support for Ukraine after the war ends.
