Bogota, Aug 14 (V7N)- The death toll from the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia has risen to 273. At least 400 people remain missing, according to the country's relevant authorities.
The earthquake struck on Monday morning local time. Its epicenter was located about 280 kilometers from the capital, Bogota, at a depth of around 96 kilometers.
The powerful tremor was felt strongly in several cities, including Bogota. Several aftershocks were also recorded following the main earthquake.
The earthquake has caused widespread destruction across the affected areas. More than 12,500 houses have been completely destroyed, while around 75,000 others have suffered partial damage.
Authorities said 227 of the 273 people killed have so far been identified.
Four days after the disaster, the chances of finding survivors beneath the rubble are gradually diminishing. However, rescue teams continue to search damaged buildings and collapsed structures in the hope of finding people still alive.
Rescue workers are carrying out operations with heavy equipment while local residents and volunteers are also assisting in the search and relief efforts.
Authorities fear that the death toll could rise further as rescue operations continue and the full extent of the damage becomes clearer.
