New York, Sep 23 (V7N)- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza, describing the actions as “genocide” during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday (September 23).
Sánchez said Spain “condemns without qualification” what he described as the genocide being perpetrated in Gaza by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Sánchez said Spain had consistently opposed what he described as wars of aggression and military actions that violate the UN Charter.
He referred to conflicts in Ukraine, Lebanon and Iran, saying Spain opposed aggression regardless of where it originated. He also defended his government’s approach to military spending and its stated commitment to preventing the use of Spanish territory for actions that violate international law.
Sánchez said Spain would maintain sanctions against Russia and continue its arms embargo on Israel. Spain has previously adopted measures restricting the transit of weapons destined for Israel through its territory.
The Spanish prime minister also called for greater respect for international law and stronger multilateral action to address ongoing conflicts.
His remarks came amid continuing international debate over Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. In September 2025, a UN Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, a finding that Israel rejects.
The issue has remained a major focus of the UN General Assembly, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres also calling for an end to the fighting, increased humanitarian access and compliance with international law.
Sánchez’s address placed Spain’s position on Gaza, Ukraine and broader international conflicts at the centre of its participation in the UN General Assembly.
