Barguna, Dec 07 (V7N) – The coastal upazila of Patharghata in Barguna, located in southern Bangladesh, is gradually transforming into one of the region’s most captivating eco-tourism attractions. Blessed with serene natural beauty, the area continues to draw visitors who are mesmerized by its tranquil rivers, lush forests, and picturesque island landscapes.

Ruhitar Char, one of Patharghata’s most popular natural spots, has become especially beloved among tourists. The island’s calm environment and unspoiled scenery enchant visitors at first sight. The breathtaking sunrise and sunset views over the open horizon have turned the site into a preferred getaway for nature enthusiasts from near and far.

Just two kilometers from Ruhitar Char lies Bihongadwip, situated at the confluence of the Bishkhali and Baleshwar rivers. Surrounded by dense mangrove forests, the island is home to a diverse population of wildlife, including deer, monkeys, wild boars, squirrels, fishing cats, jungle cats, porcupines, otters, foxes, and various other species. Numerous species of birds fill the island with constant melody, creating an atmosphere that attracts photographers, researchers, and eco-tourists alike.

Approximately five kilometers south of Bihongadwip stands the Haringhata Ecopark. Visitors traveling to the area can experience all three major attractions—Ruhitar Char, Bihongadwip, and Haringhata—within a single trip. Increasing numbers of tourists from across Bangladesh are arriving each week, many describing Ruhitar Char as a “mini Kuakata” because of its beach-like coastal environment. The red crab colonies scattered across the shoreline add a unique charm, forming delightful scenes that captivate visitors.

Tourists, however, continue to express concerns about limited management and infrastructure. Access routes to Ruhitar Char and Bihongadwip remain unsafe in several areas, and mobile network coverage is inconsistent. As a result, visitors often face difficulty navigating the area if they become disoriented.

Rubel Azmin, a tourist who recently visited the island, said he was impressed by the harmonious blend of river, forest, and coastal landscapes. He added that the site has become well known among nature lovers, and the number of tourists increases significantly on weekends. “It’s truly a wonderful place. I enjoyed every moment here,” he said.

Local resident Zakir Munsi stated that initiatives are underway to develop the region in a more organized and attractive manner. He emphasized that ensuring tourists’ safety and preventing harassment are top priorities. According to him, the community is committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all visitors.

Patharghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mizanur Rahman confirmed that several infrastructure development projects are already in progress to transform Ruhitar Char into a fully equipped tourist destination. A new lighting system is being installed across the area to enhance safety and accessibility. Plans are also being finalized to establish a permanent police camp to ensure round-the-clock security for visitors. Authorities believe these initiatives will not only elevate Ruhitar Char’s appeal within the national tourism sector but also significantly contribute to the economic wellbeing of the local population.

The growing interest in Patharghata’s natural attractions signals the potential of Barguna’s coastal belt to become a key eco-tourism hub in Bangladesh, provided that sustainable development and proper management continue to move forward.
