Paris, Oct 29 (V7N)- Manchester City’s star midfielder Rodri claimed the 2024 Ballon d'Or, marking a historic win as he became the first Spanish player in 64 years to receive this prestigious honor. Former Liberian President and AC Milan legend George Weah, the 1995 Ballon d'Or winner, announced Rodri’s name on stage at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Rodri’s achievement makes him the second Spanish player to win the Ballon d'Or, with the first being Luis Suárez in 1960. This award also makes him the first Manchester City player to win the Ballon d'Or and the first defensive player to secure the title since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.

Visibly emotional and on crutches due to a recent injury, Rodri climbed the stage to accept his award. He spoke in Spanish, calling it a "very, very special day" for himself, his family, and Spain. Switching to English, he emphasized his dedication to growth: "I try to improve every day... in the role of a modern-day holding midfielder."

The Spanish midfielder’s exceptional season included winning the UEFA European Championship with Spain, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He also celebrated victories with Manchester City in the Premier League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup, with his teams suffering only one defeat last season. Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior and England’s Jude Bellingham followed him in second and third place in the Ballon d'Or rankings, respectively.

Rodri reflected on his personal journey, describing himself as "an ordinary person" who enjoys sports and values calm over intensity, hoping to set an example for younger players. Regarding his recent injury, he expressed optimism: "I feel better than ever... it’s part of life," adding that he now looks forward to time with his family before making a strong return to the field.

Rodri’s win brought joy to fans of both Spain and Manchester City, marking a historic achievement for his club, country, and position.
