Nov 20 (V7N) – Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal, one of the sport's most decorated players, officially retired on Tuesday at the Davis Cup in Málaga, ending an illustrious 23-year career that saw him claim 22 Grand Slam titles and countless admirers worldwide.

A Curtain Call in Málaga

Nadal's career came to an emotional close after Spain's 2-1 loss to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. The 38-year-old was defeated by Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-4 in the singles rubber before Spain’s doubles pair fell in a nail-biting decider.

Despite the result, the focus was on celebrating Nadal’s legacy. A tribute ceremony included heartfelt messages from rivals like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray, tennis stars like Serena Williams, and even Spanish football icons Raul and Andres Iniesta.

"I'm leaving with the peace of mind that I’ve left a legacy, not just in sport, but as a person," Nadal said during an emotional speech.

A Legacy Beyond Titles

Widely regarded as the "King of Clay", Nadal dominated Roland Garros, winning a record 14 French Open titles, a feat celebrated with his image projected on the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

However, the Spaniard hopes his legacy is remembered beyond his achievements.
"The titles are there, but I want to be remembered as a good person... a kid from a small village in Mallorca who followed his dreams," Nadal reflected.

He also credited his uncle and longtime coach, Toni Nadal, and his family for their unwavering support, saying, "They made me who I am."

Fellow Spaniard and rising star Carlos Alcaraz, seen by many as Nadal's heir, described his legacy as "eternal."
"It’s almost impossible to continue his legacy," Alcaraz said. "He’s been great for tennis, for Spain, and for my life."

Spain’s Davis Cup captain David Ferrer echoed the sentiment:
"There are achievements that will be remembered for a lifetime, but Rafa’s legacy will be remembered eternally."

Former world number one Boris Becker called Nadal an "absolute icon of sport," adding, "There will never be another like Rafa."

Nadal expressed calmness about retirement, confident in his preparation for life beyond tennis. He emphasized his desire to remain an ambassador for the sport and thanked fans worldwide for their support.
