Inter Miami got off to a flying start in the new Major League Soccer season with a convincing 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake, courtesy of Lionel Messi's masterful performance on Wednesday.
The Argentine football legend, playing the full 90 minutes, showcased his class as he orchestrated both goals for Gerardo "Tata" Martino's side, dismissing any doubts about his fitness.
In the 18th minute, Messi nearly broke the deadlock with a trademark curling free-kick, only to be denied by a goal-line clearance from Justen Glad. However, Miami surged ahead when Sergio Busquets found Messi, who then set up Finnish striker Robert Taylor for a clinical finish past RSL keeper Zac MacMath.
Despite Real Salt Lake's attempts to mount a comeback after the break, including Cristian Arango's wayward effort and Andres Gomez's missed opportunity, Messi's influence continued to grow.
With a keen sense of urgency, Messi led Miami's charge, providing an assist for Diego Gomez's goal after linking up with former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez. The Paraguayan midfielder made no mistake, slotting the ball into the far corner to double Miami's lead.
Messi, Suarez, and Gomez combined dangerously once more, but MacMath thwarted Suarez's attempt to extend the lead.
The victory sets a positive tone for Inter Miami, who will face Los Angeles Galaxy in their next fixture on Sunday.
With Messi's stellar performance laying down the marker, Inter Miami fans have every reason to be optimistic about their team's prospects in the MLS season ahead.
