Riyadh, Dec 22, (V7N) - Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury are set for a highly anticipated rematch in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday for the WBC, WBO, and WBA heavyweight world titles. This fight is a continuation of their May showdown, where Usyk emerged victorious by split decision, despite Fury leading on two of the scorecards after the first eight rounds. Usyk, however, delivered a powerful performance in the final rounds, knocking down Fury in the 9th and winning the next two rounds to secure the victory with scores of 115-112, 114-113, and 113-114. This win crowned Usyk as the first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era.
Usyk, a 37-year-old from Crimea, Ukraine, moved up to the heavyweight division in 2019 after establishing himself as an undisputed cruiserweight champion. His victory over Fury was one of several milestones in his career, including a dominant win against Anthony Joshua in 2021 to capture the WBO, WBA, and IBF heavyweight titles. Usyk successfully defended those titles in a rematch against Joshua later that year.
"I have a big opportunity for my family, my country, and for history," Usyk said after his victory over Fury. "It's a great day."
On the other hand, Tyson Fury, 36, from Manchester, England, enters the rematch with a professional record of 34 wins, one loss, and one draw. Fury’s last bout was in October 2023, where he won a lackluster split-decision over former UFC champion Francis Ngannou. Although Fury won the fight, he was knocked down in the third round and struggled for much of the match.
“Obviously, it’s a massive, massive fight for both of us,” Fury said of the upcoming rematch. “I want to win badly because I want to avenge my only loss. It means a lot to me to get this rematch straight away instead of chasing someone around.”
The stakes are high for both fighters. Usyk aims to further cement his legacy as one of the best in boxing history, while Fury looks to reclaim his heavyweight supremacy and prove that his loss to Usyk was a fluke. Both fighters are determined to come out on top, making this a must-watch event for boxing fans.
