New York, Dec 25, (V7N) - Aaron Rodgers, the veteran quarterback, expressed his desire to play a 21st NFL season with the New York Jets in 2025. However, he has deflected questions about his future, suggesting that the decision ultimately rests with the team’s owner, Woody Johnson, and the incoming management. The Jets have endured a challenging season, resulting in the mid-season firings of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas. Rodgers acknowledged that his future with the franchise depends on the decisions of the new leadership.
“There’s a GM that has to get hired, I would assume first, and then he’s going to be part of hiring the head coach,” Rodgers told reporters. “So I have to be in the plans of multiple people, starting with the ownership and then the GM and the head coach.”In his recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers joked about reports that Johnson has been influenced by advice from his teenage sons, Brick and Jack, in making team decisions, including player trades.
“Being released would be a first; being released by a teenager, that would also be a first,” Rodgers quipped. “Hey, I’m open to everything and I find the comedy in all of it. If that happens, hey, it’s a great story.”
The Athletic recently reported that Johnson’s sons have played a role in major franchise decisions, adding a unique twist to the team’s ongoing rebuild. The Jets face a $49 million dead cap hit if they release or trade Rodgers this offseason, making his future a financial and strategic puzzle for the organization.
After missing the majority of his first season with New York due to an Achilles injury sustained in Week 1, Rodgers returned with 3,511 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 2024. Despite his efforts, the Jets are 4-11 heading into the final stretch of the season. With the GM and head coach roles vacant, the Jets are embarking on a critical offseason. Rodgers has made it clear he wants to be part of the solution, but he emphasized that the decision rests with Johnson and the new leadership team.
“Ask Woody,” Rodgers said when questioned about Johnson’s interest in retaining him, noting they haven’t yet discussed his future with the franchise.
