DHAKA, Dec 31, (V7N) – The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) continued to deliver enthralling cricket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, with record-breaking performances and dramatic incidents taking center stage.

The Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, known for its historically slow and low pitches, surprised players and fans alike with a sporting wicket. Offering even bounce and a true surface, the revamped pitch has encouraged high-scoring matches, including consecutive 190-plus totals in four games—an unprecedented feat in Mirpur.

BCB President Faruque Ahmed underscored the importance of competitive pitches, which are seen as a cornerstone for improving both domestic cricket and the national team’s adaptability to high-scoring conditions on the international stage.

"The wicket must be sporting so that both batters and bowlers get equal advantage," said Faruque, who ensured a measured 2.5 millimeters of grass was retained to maintain the wicket's quality.

Khulna Tigers Shine with Ankon’s Record-Breaking Knock

Khulna Tigers’ Mahidul Islam Ankon stole the spotlight with a blistering 18-ball fifty, the fastest by a Bangladeshi batter in recognized T20 cricket, equaling Liton Das’s record. Ankon smashed 59 runs off 22 balls, featuring six sixes and a four, steering Khulna to a commanding 203-4 against Chittagong Kings.

Australian recruit William Bosisto anchored the innings with an unbeaten 75 off 50 balls, while Ankon and Bosisto added 86 runs in just 34 balls in a scintillating fifth-wicket partnership.

Timed Out Drama Adds Spice to the Contest

The match between Khulna Tigers and Chittagong Kings witnessed a rare 'Timed Out' controversy when Chittagong batter Tom O'Connell took over three minutes to reach the crease. While Khulna skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz initially requested a 'Timed Out' dismissal, he later called O'Connell back, showing sportsmanship.

Ironically, O'Connell was dismissed on the very next delivery, caught by Miraz himself.

This incident evoked memories of Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan's historic 'Timed Out' call against Angelo Mathews during the 2023 World Cup, which sparked widespread debate in the cricket fraternity.

Khulna Clinches a Commanding Win

Defending their total of 203-4, Khulna Tigers bowled out Chittagong Kings for 166 in 18.5 overs, securing a 37-run victory. Miraz’s tactical acumen and Ankon’s explosive batting reaffirmed Khulna’s credentials as serious contenders for the BPL title.

BPL’s Growing Appeal

Off-field initiatives such as the introduction of a mascot, promotional tours, and concerts at the league’s venues have added vibrancy to the BPL. However, as Faruque Ahmed aptly noted, the focus remains on delivering quality cricket on competitive wickets to ensure the tournament’s success.

With Mirpur's sporting wicket setting the stage for thrilling contests, the BPL promises more action-packed cricket as the tournament progresses.
