Dhaka, Feb 15 (V7N) – The historic Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka has been renamed as National Stadium, as per a notification issued by the National Sports Council on Saturday (February 15). The announcement was made in a circular signed by Council Secretary Mohammad Aminul Islam.
A Stadium with Rich History
Originally built in 1954 in Paltan, Dhaka, the stadium was previously known as National Stadium No. 1 before being renamed Bangabandhu Stadium during the Awami League era. The latest decision restores its national identity while retaining a tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in its title.
A Multi-Sport Venue Turned Football Hub
Once a venue for all major sports, including cricket, the stadium has now been primarily designated for football and athletics. With a seating capacity of approximately 36,000 spectators, it remains a key sports venue in Bangladesh.
The renaming decision is seen as part of ongoing reforms in the sports sector, aiming to enhance national sporting infrastructure while preserving the historical significance of key venues.
