After defeating Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday, Katie Boulter of Great Britain won the greatest championship in her career. This was the WTA San Diego Open.
For the first time in her career, the 27-year-old, whose lone WTA title came in Nottingham in June, enters the top 30 worldwide rankings.
In the semifinals, Boulter had defeated American Emma Navarro, the third-seeded player.
34-year-old Kostyuk struggled after defeating the heavy-hitting British player in the opening set, but he had defeated top-seeded Jessica Pegula to get to the championship match.
Rain postponed the final, and on her eighth set point, Boulter gave the Ukrainian the hard-fought first set after she double-faulted.
However, Boulter had momentum going into the second set after fighting back from a 5-2 deficit to a 5-5 advantage in the first set.
She led 3-1 with a brilliant forehand winner down the line, and she broke once more to lead 5-2 and set up a third set.
Boulter gained confidence as Kostyuk wore down and broke her opponent twice before launching two forceful aces in the last game.
In a victory that would propel her to 27th in the global rankings, Boulter converted seven of her eleven break points and saved seven of the eleven that she faced.
Boulter was accompanied by her Australian partner Alex de Minaur, who had flown in after winning the ATP championship in Acapulco on Saturday. "I didn't think I would be standing here with a trophy right now, I didn't," Boulter said.
