Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon voiced disappointment with the national team's performance in the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka, emphasizing concerns about their approach and shot selection.
Papon, speaking after an Independence Day T10 exhibition match, highlighted the team's failure to surpass 200 runs in both innings, contributing to their significant 328-run defeat. He expressed dismay at what he perceived as a lack of commitment and proper mindset for Test cricket, particularly criticizing the shot selections of Liton Das and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto during the chase of an improbable 511-run target.
The BCB president emphasized that such shot selections and mindsets were not suitable for Test cricket, urging players to recognize the significance of the format and exhibit appropriate maturity on the field.
Despite the disappointing performance, Papon acknowledged that the team is in a transitional phase, with several senior players absent from the squad. Notably, Mahmudullah Riyad had retired from Test cricket, while Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Tamim Iqbal were unavailable for various reasons.
Papon underscored the team's lack of experienced players in the match against Sri Lanka, emphasizing the significance of senior players in guiding the younger members. He also highlighted the decision to play on a different wicket as part of the team's future plans, indicating that the focus was on development rather than immediate results.
While acknowledging the disappointment of losing, Papon emphasized the importance of understanding the team's transitional phase and reiterated the board's commitment to supporting the players as they navigate through this period of change.
