Mykolas Alekna made history in men's athletics on Sunday by breaking the longest-standing world record with a monumental discus throw of 74.35 meters. The 21-year-old Lithuanian achieved this feat at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational in Ramona, Oklahoma, marking a significant milestone in the sport.

Alekna's record-breaking throw, which surpassed Jurgen Schult's previous mark of 74.08 meters set in 1986, came on his fifth attempt during the low-key event dedicated solely to throwing field events.

This achievement also ended Schult's nearly 38-year reign as the holder of the longest-standing men's world record in athletics, a distinction previously held by Jesse Owens for the long jump.

Notably, Mykolas Alekna follows in the footsteps of his father, Virgilijus Alekna, a former double Olympic discus champion who secured gold in the event at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. The Alekna family's legacy in discus throwing continues with Mykolas's groundbreaking performance on the global stage.
