Harry Kewell, the coach of Yokohama F-Marinos, is drawing inspiration from his experience with Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League final ahead of the Asian Champions League semi-final second leg. Despite losing the first leg 1-0 to Ulsan Hyundai, Kewell believes his team can replicate the spirit of Liverpool's remarkable comeback in Istanbul.
Kewell famously won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, where they overturned a three-goal deficit against AC Milan to eventually win on penalties. Despite being injured early in that final, Kewell recalls the hunger and desire of his team to achieve the impossible.
Speaking ahead of the second leg, Kewell expressed optimism about his team's chances: "It just goes to show that a game is never finished, especially when you've got a hunger and a desire in a team. And I see that hunger and desire in this team to go out there and do something magical."
Since taking over as Yokohama's coach at the start of the year, Kewell has been trying to instill a winning mentality in the squad. He looks to fellow former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso, who has found success as a manager in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen, as an inspiration for his coaching approach.
Kewell also emphasized the importance of developing his own coaching style rather than relying solely on advice from former colleagues like Ange Postecoglou, who previously coached at Yokohama.
The challenge ahead for Yokohama is significant, facing a determined Ulsan team aiming for their third Champions League title. However, Kewell is determined to lead his side to a historic achievement, drawing on the lessons and experiences from his playing career to inspire his players. The winner of this semi-final will progress to face either Al-Ain or Al-Hilal in the final of the Asian Champions League.
