Former Florida Atlantic standout guard Johnell Davis, regarded as one of the top players in the transfer portal, announced his decision to commit to Arkansas on Wednesday.
Despite his commitment, Davis is still actively participating in the NBA draft process and has scheduled multiple team workouts in the coming weeks. He anticipates learning whether he will receive an invitation to the NBA draft combine later this week. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, Davis previously tested the NBA draft waters last year, notably taking part in the G League Elite Camp. However, he ultimately opted to return to Florida Atlantic for another season, during which he delivered his most impressive performance to date.
Davis earned a share of the AAC Player of the Year accolade after posting career-high statistics across various categories, averaging 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game while shooting an impressive 41.4% from beyond the arc. Notably, he showcased his talent in FAU's significant victory over Arizona in Las Vegas, tallying 35 points and nine rebounds. Throughout the season, Davis displayed his scoring prowess by recording two additional 30-point performances against UAB and UTSA, including a standout 34-point effort in an overtime triumph.
Furthermore, Davis played a pivotal role in FAU's success during the 2022–23 season, contributing 13.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He notably elevated his performance during the NCAA tournament, notably registering 29 points and 12 rebounds in a second-round victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.
Following the departure of several key players and their head coach, Florida Atlantic underwent significant changes, prompting Davis to explore other opportunities. Meanwhile, Arkansas head coach John Calipari has been actively reconstructing the team's roster, securing commitments from talented players such as Jonas Aidoo from Tennessee, Zvonimir Ivisic from Kentucky, and top-40 recruits Boogie Fland, Karter Knox, and Billy Richmond, who were previously committed to Kentucky. Davis's decision to join Arkansas marks a significant addition to the team's roster as they continue to strengthen their lineup under Calipari's leadership in Fayetteville.
