Feyenoord coach Arne Slot confirmed on Friday that he will be taking over as the manager of Liverpool next season, replacing Jurgen Klopp. Slot's impending move to Liverpool was previously hinted at, and he addressed the speculation directly, indicating that an official announcement was forthcoming.
Slot's deal to join Liverpool is reportedly worth up to £9.4 million (10.9 million euros). He has been with Feyenoord since 2021, having previously impressed in his first managerial role at AZ Alkmaar. Slot led Feyenoord to the inaugural Europa Conference League final in his first season, where they narrowly lost to Jose Mourinho's Roma. Last season, he guided Feyenoord to their second league title in 24 years and subsequently signed a new three-year contract with the club.
Jurgen Klopp, who has managed Liverpool for nine years, will step down at the end of this season. Under Klopp, Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. Initially, Bayer Leverkusen boss and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso was considered the favorite to succeed Klopp, but Alonso committed to staying at Leverkusen after leading them to their first-ever Bundesliga title.
Feyenoord has had a strong season under Slot, winning the Dutch Cup and securing second place in the league behind PSV Eindhoven. Slot's Feyenoord team has lost only two league games all season and could achieve 84 points with a win in their final game, making them the second-best Feyenoord team in club history. Slot is known for his attacking style of football, which has won praise from Klopp and fits well with Liverpool's philosophy.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, a fellow Dutchman, has also praised Slot's attacking mindset, indicating that it would be a good fit for Anfield. Slot is a fan of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and has a reputation as a player for his accurate passing, which is encapsulated in the "Arne Slot Pass" – a slight deflection from a forward with his back to goal that splits the defense and releases a winger.
Slot's arrival at Liverpool marks a new chapter for the club as they look to build on Klopp's successful tenure with a fresh perspective and approach to the game.
