Bangladesh is determined to get back on the winning track as they face the Netherlands in their third game of the T20 World Cup at St. Vincent in the West Indies on Thursday, starting at 8:30 PM (Bangladesh Time).
A victory against the Netherlands will keep Bangladesh's hopes alive for the Super 8 phase. After a thrilling two-wicket win over Sri Lanka, Bangladesh suffered a heartbreaking four-run defeat against South Africa, failing to chase down just 114 runs.
The Netherlands is expected to present a tough challenge, given their form in the tournament. However, Bangladesh holds a favorable record against the Dutch in T20 World Cups, having won twice in their previous encounters at Dharamshala in 2016 and Hobart in 2022. Overall, Bangladesh has won three out of four matches against the Netherlands.
Despite this, Bangladesh’s 87-run defeat to the Netherlands in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India still lingers. That loss sparked widespread criticism back home. Facing the Netherlands again in another World Cup, albeit in a different format, brings a sense of seeking redemption.
Bangladesh pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib emphasized that the past defeat in the ODI format is not a concern for the team now. "As a group, we have been in good stead even though we lost the game to South Africa after coming agonizingly close. But our team unity is very strong. I think if we continue our performance in the same vein, we can beat any team in the world."
Sakib added that Bangladesh is now focused on winning the last two group matches to secure a spot in the Super 8 phase. "The defeat against South Africa is past now. We have two matches at hand, so we need to win those two matches. We are confident that we will be able to beat those two teams."
Bangladesh will hope for ace allrounder Shakib Al Hasan to regain his form ahead of this crucial game. Shakib's underperformance in the last two matches is believed to have cost Bangladesh the game against South Africa. However, despite Shakib's form, the team is unlikely to make any changes to the squad.
