CONCACAF announced on Friday that it will investigate incidents of online racist abuse directed at Canadian player Moise Bombito, following his team's defeat to Argentina in their Copa America opener.

The abuse targeted Bombito after an incident late in the game where he tackled Argentina's Lionel Messi, resulting in heavy contact with Messi's ankle. Replays of the tackle circulated online, sparking a wave of racist comments directed at the 24-year-old Colorado Rapids player.

In a statement, CONCACAF expressed solidarity with Canada Soccer and condemned the offensive social media posts aimed at Bombito. "We stand with Canada Soccer in condemning the disgraceful social media posts aimed at Moise Bombito," the statement read. "Racism has no place in our sport or in society."

The regional governing body, covering North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, also announced collaboration with CONMEBOL, the governing body for South American football, and FIFA to identify and investigate the accounts responsible for the racist abuse. "We are now working with the federation and with our colleagues at CONMEBOL and FIFA to seek ways to investigate the accounts which posted racist material," CONCACAF stated.

Furthermore, CONCACAF affirmed its commitment to promoting unity and respect within football, pledging to leverage its influence to combat discrimination in all its forms.

The investigation underscores ongoing efforts within football to tackle racism and uphold the principles of inclusivity and fair play across the sport.
