South Korea's Amy Yang and American Sarah Schmelzel are tied for the lead after the second round of the Women's PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club. Both golfers finished the day at six-under-par 138, while world number one Nelly Korda experienced a dramatic collapse.
Sarah Schmelzel, ranked 73rd globally, posted the round of the week with a five-under 67, showcasing her skill despite missing the cut in five of her last seven starts. "It was a little softer this morning. Overall, the greens were perfect. I was just happy to take advantage of it," said Schmelzel. She managed six birdies, including a crucial 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th, and finished with a tap-in birdie on the 18th.
Amy Yang, with a bogey-free round of 68, was equally impressive. Yang, who has 21 top-10 finishes in major tournaments without a victory, delivered precise shots, including an approach at the 18th that left her inches from the hole. "It's about staying focused and maintaining consistency. Today was a great example of that," Yang noted.
In contrast, Nelly Korda, a six-time LPGA winner this season, struggled significantly. Starting the day just one stroke off the lead, she ended with a nine-over 81, the highest round of her professional career. Her round included eight bogeys and a double bogey before she finally made a birdie on the 18th. This performance left her at six-over 150, missing the cut by one stroke.
Other notable performances included Lexi Thompson, Japan's Hinako Shibuno, and South Korea's Ko Jin-young, all tied for third at 140, just two strokes behind the leaders. Thompson, who is playing her final season, managed a steady round of 72, while Shibuno and Ko shot 70 and 68 respectively.
Yang and Schmelzel will look to maintain their momentum as the championship progresses, while Korda will aim to regroup after a surprising exit.
