Two individuals were hospitalized following a lightning strike near a home at TPC River Highlands, the site of the US PGA Tour Travelers Championship, according to the Cromwell Fire Department. The incident occurred around 4:26 pm on Saturday, approximately an hour after play was suspended due to thunderstorms in the area. Emergency calls reported the lightning strike near the fifth green of the course.
First responders found a tree that had been struck by lightning and three people in close proximity to the strike. Two of the individuals were treated on-site and transported to local hospitals for further evaluation, while one person refused treatment.
The tournament experienced nearly three hours of suspension on Saturday due to severe weather, following a similar three-hour and 14-minute delay on Friday. South Korean golfer Tom Kim held a one-shot lead after 54 holes in the tournament, which is the final elite signature event of the PGA Tour season.
