Germany clinched the top spot in Group A at Euro 2024 with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland, thanks to Niclas Fuellkrug's stoppage-time goal. Switzerland had taken the lead through Dan Ndoye in the first half, but Fuellkrug's late header ensured Germany finished in first place with seven points, advancing to the last 16.
"We did well to come back. We deserved it," said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann. "Niclas is important for us. It's important to have players who can score decisive goals coming on as substitutes."
In another Group A match, Hungary defeated Scotland 1-0 in Stuttgart, but the victory was marred by a serious injury to Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga. Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn, leading to an eight-minute halt in play as he received medical attention on the field. Varga was taken to the hospital with a suspected fractured cheekbone and is in a stable condition.
Hungary coach Marco Rossi confirmed Varga would not return for the tournament. "If we go through the competition of course he will not be part of the team anymore."
Germany's draw with Switzerland sees them advance as Group A winners, setting up a potential quarter-final clash with Spain. Switzerland, as runners-up, will face the second-placed team from Group B.
Despite their victory, Hungary's fate in the tournament remains uncertain with only three points from their three matches. Scotland, with just one point, have been eliminated, continuing their record of never advancing past the group stage in major tournaments.
In Group B, Italy will face Croatia, while Spain, already qualified in first place, will play against Albania. Italy currently sits in second place with three points, with Croatia and Albania both on one point. The results of these matches will determine the remaining teams advancing to the knockout stages.
