Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon has criticized national team captain Najmul Hossain Shanto's explanation regarding their T20 World Cup match against Afghanistan. Papon termed Shanto's remarks as unacceptable, emphasizing that the team should have aggressively pursued victory to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Despite facing heavy defeats to India and Australia earlier in the tournament, Bangladesh had a chance to advance to the semifinals if they defeated Afghanistan by a significant margin. After restricting Afghanistan to 115-5, Bangladesh needed to chase the target in just 12.1 overs to qualify.
Papon expressed dissatisfaction with Shanto's statement that the team didn't attempt to win after losing three wickets. He insisted that Bangladesh should have continued their aggressive approach until the required run rate was achieved. Papon acknowledged the difficulty of the pitch but maintained that chasing 116 runs in 12.1 overs was feasible in T20 cricket.
The BCB president indicated that the board is awaiting a formal report from the team's coach and manager regarding their performance in the World Cup.
