England secured their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals after defeating Switzerland on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Duesseldorf on Saturday. Gareth Southgate's team, who had a dramatic comeback against Slovakia in the previous round, continued their resilient form in a match that saw little action until the final stages.

Switzerland took the lead in the 75th minute when Breel Embolo tapped in a deflected cross from Dan Ndoye. However, England responded swiftly with Bukayo Saka scoring a fine equalizer just five minutes later, driving a low shot from the right into the far corner.

Neither team managed to find another goal in regulation or extra time, although Switzerland's Xherdan Shaqiri came closest by hitting the woodwork from a corner late in the added period.

In the penalty shootout, England converted all their penalties, with Switzerland's Manuel Akanji missing his attempt, saved by Jordan Pickford. Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Saka, Ivan Toney, and Trent Alexander-Arnold successfully scored for England, securing their spot in the semi-finals and partially redeeming their shootout defeat against Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

After the match, Gareth Southgate, celebrating his 100th game in charge, expressed his satisfaction and determination, stating, "We are not going to stop fighting, we are in another semi-final and we'll see where we can get to."

England will face the Netherlands in the semi-final in Dortmund on Wednesday, while Spain and France will meet in the other semi-final in Munich on Tuesday.
