Davis Thompson delivered an impressive performance at the John Deere Classic on Sunday, capturing his first PGA Tour title with a record-setting four-stroke victory. The 25-year-old American began his round with a series of birdies and maintained his lead throughout the day, finishing with a seven-under-par 64. His total of 28-under 256 over 72 holes at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, set a new tournament record, surpassing the previous mark of 27-under set by Michael Kim in 2018.
Thompson, currently ranked 70th in the world, started strong with birdies on five of the first six holes. He continued his momentum with consecutive birdies on the ninth and tenth holes, recovering from his only bogey at the 12th with a birdie at the 14th. He then parred his way to the finish.
"I just tried to stay present all day," Thompson said. "When that putt finally went in, just a big sigh of relief."
Taiwan's C.T. Pan, American Michael Thorbjornsen, and US amateur Luke Clanton tied for second place at 260, while Americans Ben Griffin, who shot a 62, and Carson Young finished another stroke back.
"A lot of confidence seeing the ball roll in today. It was nice," Griffin remarked. "It was a really good round."
This victory marked Thompson's first win in his 63rd PGA start, following several close finishes, including a runner-up finish last week in Detroit, another in May at Myrtle Beach, and one last year in the California desert.
"It's great," Thompson said. "I've been working hard this year. It was OK for a while then I kind of got going this past month. Played well last week and just tried to keep it rolling this week and I was able to get the win."
In addition to his victory, Thompson earned a spot in the upcoming British Open at Royal Troon, along with C.T. Pan. Pan secured his spot by ranking higher than Clanton or Thorbjornsen.
"Qualifying for the Open was just an added incentive into this," Thompson stated. "The goal was to win the golf tournament after getting here this week and I got off to a great start and was able to finish it off."
**Thompson's 'Trophy House' Tradition**
Interestingly, Thompson's rental house for the week was the same one used by previous John Deere champions J.T. Poston in 2022 and Sepp Straka in 2023. Thompson even stayed in the same bedroom as Straka.
"It might be only luck, but Thompson isn't planning on giving up his spot in the 'Trophy House' even though it comes with an expensive tradition," Thompson humorously noted. "I think I have to pay for the whole house now, which is unfortunate, but I'll gladly write the check for that."
Despite not qualifying for the British Open, Luke Clanton made history as the first amateur since Billy Joe Patton in 1958 to finish in the top-10 in PGA Tour events in back-to-back weeks.
Thompson started the final day with a two-stroke lead, making an early statement with a birdie putt from just inside 45 feet at the first hole and a tap-in birdie at the par-5 second. He continued with birdie putts from just inside 14 feet at the fourth, just inside 30 feet at the fifth, and just inside 13 feet at the sixth.
Thompson's birdie at the ninth came from just beyond six feet, and he followed up with a birdie at the par-5 10th. After a bogey at the 12th, he bounced back with a tap-in birdie at the 14th, sealing his victory with parred holes to finish his round.
