Mominul Haque, the experienced Bangladeshi batsman, is on the verge of playing in the ongoing Bangabandhu Premier League (BPL) after almost two years. Rangpur Riders have roped in the 32-year-old, who was not available in the draft midway through the tournament.
This news comes as a welcome surprise for Mominul, who was initially focusing on preparing for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. With the departure of two foreign players in the top order and the lack of form among some local batsmen, Rangpur desperately needed an experienced batsman like Mominul.
Mominul has a good track record in the BPL, having scored 1,269 runs in 70 matches at a strike rate of 107.61. He also showed his potential with a 91-run knock for Dhaka Platoon in 2020. However, he missed out on the 2022 season and was not picked in the initial draft this year.
Rangpur's star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan expressed his hope that Mominul will contribute to the team with his experience and performance. "When a senior player like Mominul comes into the team, his experience or his performance will be useful for us," Shakib said.
While Shakib is unsure about the team's exact plans for Mominul, he believes the captain and coach have a strategy in place to utilize the batsman's skills. With Rangpur currently sitting near the top of the points table, Mominul's inclusion could be the final push they need to secure a playoff spot.
The official announcement regarding Mominul's inclusion in the Rangpur playing XI is still awaited, but cricket fans in Bangladesh are eagerly waiting to see the experienced batsman back in action in the BPL.
