Rajshahi, a district on the banks of the Padma River, is burning under the sun. The scorching sun is pouring down fire-like heat on people's heads, making life difficult for them.Individuals seeking respite from the heat are turning to various sherbets available along the roadside. However, there are growing concerns about the use of fish ice in these sherbets, posing health risks despite providing temporary relief.
Amidst the ongoing heatwave, sherbet shops are proliferating along the streets of Rajshahi Nagar, resembling umbrellas emerging during rainfall. Unfortunately, these establishments are utilizing fish ice in unsanitary conditions, raising further health concerns.
Consumers remain unaware of the origins of the ice used in these sherbets, leading to unwitting ingestion of harmful germs, potentially causing diseases such as jaundice, diarrhea, and hepatitis, despite the immediate relief they offer.
Those consuming these sherbets admit their lack of awareness, expressing that they consume them due to the intense heat, finding momentary relief and a cooling sensation thereafter.
Despite reports of the use of fish ice, it's observed that it's stored alongside raw beef in unhygienic conditions in these shops.
At the ice factory, workers were observed breaking ice blocks in a filthy outdoor area. Despite these unsanitary conditions, sharbat sellers continue to purchase the ice. While factory workers acknowledged selling large freezers used for fish and meat storage at a discounted price to sharbat vendors, they refused to comment on camera.
The factory owner exhibited a concerning lack of responsibility, stating, "It's up to the individual" whether the ice is used for safe or harmful purposes.
Doctors warn against the health risks associated with consuming these sherbets, stressing the importance of hygiene standards.
Dr. FAM Anjuman Ara Begum, Chief Health Officer of Rajshahi City Corporation, highlights the risks associated with consuming roadside beverages prepared without proper hygiene, emphasizing the need for strict supervision by the community.
What are the customers eating in the name of these distorted syrups on the side of the road? In that regard, there is a demand for strict supervision of the conscious community.
