Bagerhat, July 15 (V7N) – With the slogan "Prevent Blindness," Dhaka Mega City Lions Club organized a day-long free eye camp on May 17 at the Boradia Haji Arif Madrasa in Rampal, Bagerhat. The camp, financially supported by the president of Dhaka Mega City Lions Club, Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam, served patients from Bagerhat, Mongla, Rampal, Fakirhat, Morelganj, Sharankhola, and adjacent districts and upazilas, including Botiaghata and Dacope in Khulna. A total of 530 patients were selected for cataract surgery.

From May 25 to June 13, 373 of these selected cataract patients received free surgery, lenses, medicine, and services at the 'Das Eye Hospital' in Dhaka. Additionally, out of 123 patients selected for surgeries related to the tear ducts and fleshy growths, 82 underwent operations at Khulna's Health Service Clinic from June 30 to July 11. This year, a total of 455 patients underwent surgery.

Notably, since 2009, Dhaka Mega City Lions Club has been organizing eye camps annually for the underprivileged in this region. To date, over 6,000 patients have been treated for cataracts, tear duct issues, and fleshy growths, restoring their vision and preventing blindness. Beneficiary children and students continue their education, working patients contribute to their households, and the elderly enjoy their regained eyesight.

Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam, president of Dhaka Mega City Lions Club, stated that expensive eye treatments are beyond the reach of the impoverished. Even for a club, performing surgeries on so many patients annually is extremely challenging. Hence, he urged affluent individuals in society to support this noble cause. He also appealed to other Lions and Rotary Clubs to organize similar eye camps for the people of the remote regions of Rampal-Mongla in Bagerhat.
