New York, Oct 02 (V7N)— In response to the heightened conflict between Iran and Israel, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to convene an emergency meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss the risks of further escalation in the Middle East.

This meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. local time in New York, was announced by the Swiss President of the Council. A spokesman for the Swiss mission confirmed the session, which will address the growing fears of a broader regional war following Iran's missile attack on Israel on Tuesday.

The missile barrage from Iran, which Israeli sources claim involved at least 180 missiles, came as retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and other senior figures by Israeli forces. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araki warned on social media that while their attacks would pause, any further provocation would prompt a forceful response.

The situation has drawn international attention, with the United States pledging its unwavering support to Israel. In a statement, the White House warned Tehran of "serious consequences" if the conflict continues to escalate.

This latest development in the volatile region has prompted widespread concerns about the potential for a wider conflict that could destabilise the Middle East. The UNSC emergency meeting aims to discuss ways to de-escalate the situation and prevent further violence.
