New Delhi, Oct 13 (V7N): Baba Siddique, a prominent Indian politician, was shot and killed in Mumbai, reportedly near his son's office, according to Indian media sources cited by the BBC. Siddique, 66, was a former minister and influential figure in Maharashtra state politics.
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack. Siddique, who had recently switched allegiance from the Congress party to the National Congress Party (NCP), a part of the ruling BJP coalition, was well-known for his lavish gatherings and Bollywood connections.
Maharashtra's deputy chief minister, Ajit Pawar, condemned the "cowardly attack" and pledged a thorough investigation. Despite heightened security due to an ongoing Hindu festival, Siddique was targeted, leading opposition parties to criticize the government for a severe security lapse.
While two suspects are in custody, the motive behind the attack remains unknown, and police are actively searching for a third individual. Some reports speculate that the gunmen may be linked to the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang, responsible for the murder of rapper Sidhu Moose Wala in 2022. Siddique had reportedly received death threats recently, prompting an increase in his security just weeks before the fatal attack.
