Bulambuli District, Nov 29 (V7N)– A devastating landslide in Musugu village, located in eastern Uganda, has claimed the lives of at least 30 people, with the death toll expected to rise, according to reports from the Associated Press.
The disaster struck following heavy rains that have affected various parts of the country. Fahira Malani, the District Commissioner of Bulambuli, confirmed that six bodies, including that of a child, have been recovered so far. However, many others remain missing, and some are feared to be buried under the rubble.
In addition to the fatalities, the landslide has caused significant destruction in the village. Approximately 20 houses were swept away, and 40 homes were completely buried. Several other structures have been damaged, exacerbating the crisis.
The Ugandan Prime Minister’s Office has issued a natural disaster warning following the incident, and rescue operations are currently underway to search for survivors and recover the missing.
Rescue teams are working in difficult conditions to locate those trapped under the debris. Authorities fear that the situation may worsen as the full scale of the destruction is yet to be assessed. The combination of landslides and the ongoing heavy rainfall is expected to continue posing challenges in recovery operations.
The disaster has left the affected community in shock and mourning, with many families displaced and several homes destroyed. Humanitarian agencies are preparing to provide aid, but the extent of the damage is overwhelming.
