WASHINGTO, DC, Nov 30, (V7N) - After her defeat to Donald Trump in November's election, US Vice President Kamala Harris has been left grappling with what comes next in her political career. Despite the setback, she has remained resolute, declaring during a recent call with party donors, "I am staying in the fight," without revealing specific plans. Washington is rife with speculation about her future, with some suggesting she may run for California governor when Gavin Newsom steps down in 2026.

Becoming governor of California, a state with the world’s fifth-largest economy, could provide Harris with a significant platform to reassert herself after her loss in the presidential race. Governorships in the U.S. are considered prestigious positions, offering considerable political influence. Having previously served as California's Attorney General and later as a US Senator, Harris already has strong local connections and infrastructure in place, which could make a gubernatorial bid a natural next step in her political career.

While serving as governor could serve as a springboard for a future presidential run, this route comes with challenges. Harris’s loss in the presidential race, particularly after a defeat to Trump and a lack of success in swing states, could make it difficult to secure the confidence of the Democratic Party for another run at the White House. Political scientist Julian Zelizer notes that losing a major election can cause many to doubt a politician's ability to win again in a high-stakes matchup. As such, if Harris were to pursue the governor's office, she may need to wait until at least 2032 before another shot at the presidency.

Alongside the gubernatorial path, Harris could also continue to stay active in politics in ways other than holding office, much like former vice president Al Gore did after his loss to George W. Bush. Gore found a new path as an environmental advocate, winning a Nobel Peace Prize and becoming a prominent voice on climate change. Harris could similarly carve out a new role in politics without necessarily seeking the highest office.

While the future remains uncertain, Harris's political ambition and ability to stay in the public eye will be crucial in determining her next move.
