Agartala, Dec 03 (V7N) — Three sub-inspectors have been suspended, and a Deputy Superintendent of Police has been charged with negligence following an attack on the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala, Tripura's capital. Seven Indian nationals have also been arrested in connection with the incident.

The attack occurred during a protest led by the Hindu Sangram Samiti, a right-wing organization. The protest initially began as a peaceful demonstration denouncing alleged atrocities against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh and demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu. However, the situation escalated when some protesters breached security, entered the High Commission premises, vandalized property, and disrespected the Bangladeshi national flag.

Indian media outlet India Today NE reported that despite tight security, a memorandum was submitted to the High Commission. The breach and subsequent vandalism were described as premeditated by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement expressing strong condemnation.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the incident, emphasizing that while peaceful protests are permissible, the actions taken by some individuals were unacceptable. "Such behavior is absolutely undesirable," Saha stated, noting that the gathering at Agartala Circuit House was initially peaceful.

The Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh called for stricter measures to ensure the security of its diplomatic missions, citing negligence that allowed the attack to occur.

The situation has further highlighted diplomatic sensitivities between the two neighbouring countries, with authorities in Tripura pledging accountability and action against those involved.
