Rescue teams in The Hague have recovered five bodies from the rubble of a collapsed apartment block, following a massive explosion and fire early Saturday morning. Recovery operations, which continued overnight into Sunday, have also led to the rescue of a survivor who was pulled alive from the wreckage after being trapped for 12 hours.
Authorities have confirmed that 10 people have been affected by the incident, with five fatalities and five survivors, four of whom required hospitalization. Two of those hospitalized are in serious condition, while the other two are recovering.
Ongoing Rescue and Investigation
Elite rescue units remain on-site, searching through debris for potential victims. The exact number of people still unaccounted for is unclear. Mayor Jan van Zanen warned of a slim chance of finding additional survivors, describing the situation as a "worst-case scenario."
Police are investigating the cause of the explosion and fire, which destroyed five homes within the three-story building. Witnesses have been asked to come forward, especially anyone with information about a car seen speeding away from the scene shortly after the blast at 6:15 a.m. local time.
Impact on Residents
The building, comprising ground-floor shops and five two-story apartments, was reportedly home to elderly residents and families with children. Around 40 residents of neighboring buildings have been evacuated and relocated.
Authorities are working to provide assistance to the displaced residents while focusing on recovery efforts and the investigation.
