The Nobel Committee has spoken for the first time with Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, during her temporary medical leave from Iran's Evin prison. In footage shared on social media, Mohammadi recounted the moment she learned about the award, revealing that the women's ward erupted with chants of "Woman, Life, Freedom," the slogan of Iran's protest movement.
"A fellow prisoner managed to call her husband in the men's ward, and through them, we learned the incredible news," Mohammadi said during the call, appearing without a hijab and wearing a green top.
Mohammadi, 52, has been imprisoned since November 2021 for her activism against the mandatory hijab and capital punishment in Iran. Despite her incarceration, her advocacy for human rights and her courage in the face of repression earned her the prestigious award. Her children collected the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf last year.
She was temporarily released for three weeks on medical grounds after undergoing bone surgery. However, her supporters continue to demand her unconditional and permanent release, describing the temporary leave as insufficient given her ongoing imprisonment for her activism.
