Madison, Dec 18, (V7N) - Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway expressed frustration with reporters during a press conference Tuesday, following a tragic shooting at a private Christian school that claimed two lives and injured six others.
The shooting occurred at Abundant Life Christian School on Monday around 11 a.m. Police confirmed that 15-year-old student Natalie Rupnow carried out the attack, killing a teacher and a student before taking her own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Mayor Rhodes-Conway strongly criticized reporters for repeatedly asking for details about the victims, stating, “It is absolutely none of y’all's business who was harmed in this incident. Please, have some human decency and respect for the people who lost loved ones or were injured themselves or whose children were injured.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, two students remained in critical condition. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes reported that two other victims were still receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, while the remaining two had been discharged from the hospital.
Authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting and how the suspect obtained the firearm. Investigators have searched the suspect’s home and are in contact with her family, who are cooperating with the investigation.
When asked about potential charges against the suspect’s parents or others, Mayor Rhodes-Conway said, “We don’t know nearly enough yet.”
The tense press conference marked Madison’s second school shooting this year. The mayor firmly reminded reporters to respect the victims’ privacy and allow the community time to grieve and heal. “We will share good, factual information when we can. Just have some human decency, folks. Leave them alone. Let them grieve. Let them recover. Let them heal,” she said.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and have pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available.
