Moscow, Dec 20 (V7N) — Russia is facing an unexpected crisis as North Korean troops, deployed to support Russian forces in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, reportedly turned their weapons on Russian soldiers due to a miscommunication on the battlefield.

According to a report by India Today, eight Russian soldiers were killed when North Korean troops mistakenly fired on them. The incident reportedly occurred due to confusion caused by the chaos of the battlefield and a language barrier that led to the misinterpretation of commands.

The North Korean troops, sent by President Kim Jong Un to bolster Russia's military efforts, were deployed following diplomatic discussions between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Approximately 10,000 North Korean soldiers arrived in Russia in October as part of the agreement to strengthen their alliance.

This friendly fire incident highlights the challenges of integrating foreign troops into military operations, particularly when communication barriers exist. Observers have noted that while the relationship between Putin and Kim has deepened, incidents like these could strain their newfound partnership.

Putin and Kim had previously discussed enhancing military cooperation during a visit by the Russian president to North Korea earlier this year. The alliance between the two leaders has raised international concerns, particularly regarding potential violations of international arms agreements.

For now, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in relying on foreign troops in complex war zones. Whether this will impact Russia’s strategy or its relationship with North Korea remains to be seen.
